How a Park Bench, and a Smart App
re-imagined Weather Forecasting

In today’s fast-paced world, weather forecasting apps are a dime a dozen. But how do you stand out in a crowded market? How do you make an app not just a tool, but an experience? This was the challenge behind creating the commercial for StormTrackk, a new mobile weather app that promises pinpoint accuracy and a dash of fun. The goal was simple: demonstrate the app’s reliability while making it feel fresh, engaging, and, most importantly, relatable to the viewer. What emerged from this challenge was an upbeat, visually captivating commercial that brings a human element to the science of weather prediction.

Fusing Function with Fun
At the core of the StormTrackk app is its exceptional accuracy. The app doesn’t just predict whether it will rain—it can show you exactly where the weather is happening, down to a few feet. The central concept for the commercial was inspired by this key feature: weather with a personal touch.

We wanted to show the weather as something dynamic, interactive, and even whimsical, rather than just a distant forecast. This led us to the idea of focusing on a simple yet relatable scenario: a person enjoying a beautiful sunny day in the park—until the weather throws a curveball. But with StormTrackk, the character could predict exactly how and where the rain would hit, allowing her to take control of her experience.
The Storyboard:

We crafted a story around a young lady sitting on a park bench, enjoying a bright, sunny afternoon. The peace of the moment is disrupted when she pulls out her phone and checks the weather app. The app shows her an approaching storm—but with a twist: It’s not going to rain where she’s sitting. In fact, the app reveals that just four feet away, the skies are darkening.

With a playful nod to the app’s accuracy, she moves over to the other side of the bench, and the scene transitions to show the rain and storm quickly filling the space she just vacated. Meanwhile, the sunny patch where she’s now sitting remains undisturbed. The commercial ends with her content and dry, enjoying the rest of her afternoon, thanks to StormTrackk’s ability to forecast the weather down to a local level.
Visual Style: Playing with Light, Shadows, and Space

The key to the commercial’s visual impact was its simplicity. We wanted the audience to focus on the character’s actions and emotions, without distraction, while also emphasizing the app’s functionality in a subtle yet effective way. The juxtaposition of light and dark—sunshine and rain—was a perfect visual metaphor for the app’s ability to “change your mind when the weather is fine.”

Symbolism of Choice and Control
The park bench becomes a symbol of the protagonist’s ability to “choose her own weather.” By shifting from one side to the other, she’s not just avoiding rain; she’s also taking control of her experience, demonstrating how StormTrackk empowers users to plan their day precisely. The bench also serves as a neutral background that doesn’t distract from the central action. The space around it fills with changing weather patterns, helping to emphasize the precision and dynamic nature of the app.
The Split-Screen Animation: Bringing the App to Life

One of the most important visual techniques was the split-screen animation that pops up next to the character when she checks the app on her phone. This animation allowed us to convey the app’s functionality in a visually engaging way. Rather than showing the screen directly on the phone, we placed it next to the character, as if it were an extension of the world around her. This helped to make the app feel more integrated into her environment and emphasized how the app can influence real-world decisions.

The animation itself is minimal yet striking. It shows an accurate, localized weather forecast of the area surrounding her, with storm clouds gradually creeping toward her position. The vibrant colors of the sunny side of the bench remain crisp and bright, while the rainy side becomes increasingly dark and stormy. The split-screen effect reinforced the app’s precision, visually communicating its ability to give hyper-local forecasts with accuracy.

Setting the Mood with an Upbeat Track
The music played a crucial role in shaping the tone of the commercial. We wanted something that felt fresh, optimistic, and reflective of the app’s upbeat, user-friendly vibe. After considering several options, we decided on a light, catchy tune with lyrics that perfectly aligned with the app’s promise of transforming a potentially negative weather experience into something positive.

“A Little Rain, A Little Shine, A Little Change All the Time”

The lyrics of the song capture the unpredictability of weather but also suggest that change isn’t necessarily bad—it’s just a part of life. The line “A little rain, a little shine, a little change all the time” echoes the theme of the commercial: with StormTrackk, you can adapt to changing conditions and make the most of your day.

The upbeat rhythm and the repetitive nature of the chorus create a sense of joy and ease, mirroring the character’s own sense of satisfaction as she sidesteps the storm. The song’s optimism shines through as the camera pans out to show her sitting happily on the sunny side of the bench, with a broad smile, knowing she’s in control of her environment.
Shooting the Commercial: Bringing the Concept to Life

Shooting the commercial was all about balancing a fun, playful atmosphere with clear, practical messaging. The shooting location—a beautiful, sun-drenched park—was chosen for its serene, expansive look, and the bench became the focal point of the entire story.

We used natural lighting to create a warm, inviting environment for the first half of the commercial. The sunlight represents the clarity and ease that comes with the StormTrackk app. As the scene shifts and the storm rolls in, we used a combination of practical effects (darkening skies, rapid cloud movement) and post-production techniques to enhance the contrast between the sunny side of the bench and the rainy, stormy side.
Camera Angles and Movement:

To create a sense of dynamism, we employed a mix of steady shots and subtle tracking movements. The transition between the sunny and rainy sides of the bench is executed with a smooth, almost seamless camera shift that mirrors the protagonist’s fluid actions as she moves over to the other side. This subtle shift in perspective helps reinforce the theme of control and adaptability.

Fine-Tuning the Visuals and Animation

In post-production, the visual effects team worked on seamlessly integrating the animated weather forecast with the real-world footage. The animation had to feel organic, almost like a living extension of the character’s environment, rather than a detached graphic on a screen. We also enhanced the rain and storm elements, making sure they appeared sudden and dramatic, without overpowering the sunny side of the bench. The aim was to make the transition between the two weather states feel as sharp and immediate as possible.

The final touch was integrating the song into the edit. The lyrics, paired with the visuals, helped elevate the light-hearted, positive vibe we wanted to convey. Each beat of the song synced with the action on-screen, creating a rhythmic flow that kept the viewer engaged.

A Commercial That Feels Like Sunshine
The StormTrackk commercial ultimately conveys a simple but powerful message: with the right tools, you can take control of your environment—even when the weather isn’t on your side. By focusing on an everyday scenario with a relatable protagonist, we made the app’s accuracy feel less like a technical feat and more like a personal advantage.

This commercial isn’t just about weather—it’s about empowerment. It’s about making the unpredictable world around you a little more predictable, so you can enjoy the sunny moments without worrying about the rain. And all that’s required is a little StormTrackk.

The commercial might be over in a flash, but the message—and the song—stick with you long after.
